IDYLLWILD WATER DISTRICT
OCTOBER 2011 NEWSLETTER
IWD Mission Statement - To provide reliable water & sewer service in a safe, cost effective & environmentally sound manner in accordance with the community needs.
IWD MAINTAINS LOW WATER LOSS – The IWD year to date average for unaccountable water loss remains at 2.51%; this is comparable to 10% that would be expected of a district the size of IWD. Lost water can be from water leaks before the meter and older water meters that under-register usage. Using the normal percentage of monthly water production a 10% to 12% loss can lead to hundreds of thousands of gallons and lost revenue. If a district has a 10% water loss and it produces 6,000,000 gallons (80,214 cubic feet) a month, then the water loss is 600,000 gallons of water per month or 7,200,000 gallons per year. The district pays for the pumping costs for the 7 million gallons of lost water. In turn, this water cost is eventually paid for by the customers.
IWD is continually seeking ways to maintain low water rates, so it’s important for us to maintain minimal water losses. This requires preventative programs which include locating water leaks, replacing leaky water mains and service lines. For example, we begin changing out water meters that have been in use for 15 years. These meters will under-register usage. Today’s newer water meters are more accurate and have the ability to detect leaks; they also have the ability to send meter readings by radio to the office. These new meters are functional for 20 - 25 years.
Also, the public can help by reporting leaks as soon as they spot them!
USGS SEISMIC PROJECT –The Idyllwild Water District, the USGS and the US Forest Service have been working together on a project to install two seismic monitoring stations in Idyllwild. These stations will be installed at IWD’s water and wastewater facilities. At the September 20th District board meeting, the board approved the IWD/USGS agreement. The agreement has been signed and we are scheduling the installation of the two seismic stations this month. There will be no cost to the District. The collected radio data will be received by USGS and will be made available to us. This information will be helpful to the entire community.
HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN - IWD is preparing an updated Local Hazard Mitigation Plan that will address disasters such as weather, floods, fires and earthquakes. There will be discussion on preparing these plans at the MEMSCOMM meeting located at IFPD. This meeting is open to the public and will be held on November 10th at 9:00 AM. If you have any questions please call Terry Lyons at the Idyllwild Water District at 951-659-2143.
